What is twill fabric?

Twill fabric refers to the type of weave used to create the material. This weave has a visible diagonal pattern (check out your favourite jeans for reference). Its high thread count means you get a thick and durable fabric. In addition, different coloured fibres can be weaved together to create designs such as houndstooth and tweed.

Twill materials are typically made from cotton or synthetic material blends. They have several qualities, including:

· Durability

· Wrinkle-resistance due to the thickness of the material

· Thickness

· Drapes well

· Hides stains well

Caring for twill fabric

Like many fabrics, twill is best washed on a low-temperature cycle with mild detergents. Washing inside out will help protect the colour. However, it’s important to note twill fabrics may shrink on the first wash. So, pre-washing before sewing may help get the desired result.

Sewing ideas with twill fabric

There are a host of ways to use twill fabrics for your sewing projects. Making workwear and jeans is a top option as the material provides the perfect hardwearing garment.

Home accessory projects such as cushion covers, upholstery and curtains also pair well, as twill fabrics can withstand many years of use.
